Food Preparation & Storage

Making a meal is one of the most important tasks accomplished in a kitchen. The tips below provide some guidance about food preparation and storage to make sure your meal does not become a disaster.

Food Preparation & Storage Guidelines

  • 1 Before and after handling food, always wash your hands to avoid spreading germs.
  • 2 Follow package directions for preparing, serving, and storing food.
  • 3 Keep raw meat and poultry separated from other foods when using or storing them.
  • 4 Place perishable foods, such as meat or dairy products, back in the refrigerator immediately after use.
  • 5 Wear clothing that fits well — loose clothing can easily catch fire or snag on a pot handle.
  • 6 Remove dangling jewelry like bracelets or necklaces.
  • 7 Turn pot and pan handles inward on the stove so they are not accidentally bumped or pulled.
  • 8 Don’t leave food unattended while cooking on a stove.
  • 9 Always cut away from yourself when using a knife.

Food Preparation & Storage Checklist

  • Food packages are properly sealed.
  • Leftover or uncooked food is properly separated and stored.
  • Plastic storage containers are not broken or otherwise damaged.
